在全国各方的努力下，受新冠病毒感染的重症、危重症和死亡病例占确诊病例的比例明显下降。但是，全国的重症患者数量仍然很多。在当前形势下，全力加强重症患者的救治，减少轻症患者向重症、危重症转化是提高治愈率、降低死亡率的关键。
武汉大学数学与统计学院邹秀芬教授所带领的生物数学团队与武汉大学人民医院感染科江应安教授团队合作，深入开展新型冠状病毒的临床研究。武汉大学人民医院是湖北省政府防控疫情指挥部指定的重症新型冠状病毒肺炎定点医院，该合作团队收集了2020年1月11日至2020年2月11日在武汉大学人民医院住院期间，经新型冠状病毒核酸检测确诊的80例肺炎患者死亡病例的临床资料，包括患者的临床特征、实验室检测数据和影像学资料等，通过特征提取，临床分型和统计分析，发现患者各类白细胞数目及比例的情况先好转再恶化，红细胞数目，血红蛋白水平没有明显好转，血小板计数持续下降。酸碱度向酸性方向发展，这与体内氧气含量、二氧化碳含量变化一致，乳酸含量持续上升，游离钙有恢复正常的趋势。白蛋白低于正常水平且有继续下降的趋势，球蛋白多数处于正常范围，有上升的趋势。白细胞数目特别是中性粒细胞数目的突然增多可能预示着患者开始迅速恶化至死亡。死亡的主要原因是顽固性低氧血症引起的呼吸衰竭。
该合作团队的研究工作已整理成论文投稿到《中华传染病杂志》，为探索新冠病毒感染的发病机制，针对可能的细胞因子风暴，在重型患者早期即开展人工肝血液净化治疗和IL-6单抗治疗，阻断细胞因子风暴，防止其向危重型发展提供了重要参考。
目前合作团队还在抓紧时间继续对康复病人和危重病人的数据进行对照分析，努力找出病例特征的差异性和治疗效果的差异性。为积极寻找有效的抗病毒治疗药物，降低病死率和早日研发疫苗来应对COVID-19贡献力量。
